Excerpts-Lessons by Swami Paramahamasa Sivananda of Divine Life Society Hrikesh
Stage 1: Basic Lessons-Practical Lessons in Yoga
Prana means breath and Ayama means control. By Pranayama is meant the control of Prana and the vital forces of the body.
Pranayama begins with the regulation of breath and ends in establishing full and perfect control over the life-currents or inner vital forces. In other words, Pranayama is the perfect control of the life-currents through regulation of breath.
Breath like electricity is gross Prana. By establishing control over the gross Prana, you can easily gain control over the subtle Prana inside.
The process by which such control is established is called Pranayama. Pranayama is the fourth limb of Ashtanga Yoga.
Prana is the oldest for, it starts functioning from the very moment the child is conceived. On the contrary, the organs of the body such as hearing, and so forth, begin to function only when their special abodes viz., the ears, etc., are formed.
1. Have a designated sacred space for daily meditation sessions. This can be the same room you use for yoga and pranayam.
The room should be clean and well ventilated with fresh air. If you can’t have a separate room, you can allocate a portion of a room to your practice.
2. Overeating and fasting should be avoided.
3. The recommended time for meditation is early morning as the mind is naturally calm and fresh at that time.
4. Be consistent. Meditation should be done at the same time daily. Don’t give up within few minutes of starting the practice. If you feel restless it’s only because you become more aware of it when you sit down in meditation.
Air Yoga is an amazing technique using silk hammocks to truly make new space in the body and allow our selves to completely surrender to gravity.
Combining the ancient healing traditions of yoga with the unique conditioning of aerial arts , air yoga brings the gift of flight, and an incredible lightness to soaring, stretching and floating through the air suspended hammocks.
With this practice we find many unique ways to stretch and squeeze and twist our physical body, refreshing the circulatory system, and redirecting the spine to her beautiful natural way.
Air yoga can be practiced by anyone. Even if you have never taken a yoga class you will be truly surprised with how much new movements you can do and how much more body awareness you can achieve.
